About
Why ProjReality.com?
My original idea, from over 5 years ago, was to create an online virtual world with realistic real-time graphics and physics simulation. Anyone running a server could host a geographical area within this virtual world, and connect to other servers hosting neighboring locations. Anyone could walk around in this world, interact with other users, and seamlessly transition between different servers. Hence “Project Reality” – developing an environment that would create another reality.
This would have taken a ridiculous amount of work, far more than one person could have done. Needless to say, the idea just remained in my mind, and nothing more came of it. In the meantime, environments such as SecondLife have come up, using a working business model that would actually allow the company to make a profit from their efforts. I hadn’t even thought that far when I came up with my original idea.
For the moment, this website will simply be about my various interests, in addition to being the place where I blog (rant?). The details may change as time goes on, but for the moment I plan to have a section on 3D modeling – Blender in particular – which seems an appropriate continuation of my interest in virtual worlds. A section on computer security would also seem appropriate, given my (supposed) paranoia in that department.
For anyone who is wondering why I didn’t take projectreality.com – the domain name was already purchased by a reseller when I checked over 5 years ago. It was on sale for about $2500 or so, which I wasn’t about to pay. Someone actually bought it and had a website for a while. When I checked again recently, it was back in the hands of a reseller, where it was now about $8000. Ouch.
